Description
The Shelter program is critical to saving lives. Many families flee in the night to escape violence and abuse. They bring little more than the clothes they wear and what they can quickly grab. Not only do they find refuge when home is no longer safe or available, they receive food, clothing, personal supplies, transportation, nutrition education, violence prevention education, on-site childcare, access to medical care and connectivity and advocacy with community resources that can help them in their journey to rebuild shattered lives - and shattered dreams. Children in shelter often just learn to "be a child again" as their parent becomes stronger and builds capacities for the future. Shelter participants participate in the Shelter community living environment through weekly resident house management meetings, feedback through surveys and sharing input with staff during individual sessions. During 2014 the shelter often housed 70-85 persons at a time. Shelter is a 24 hour program.

Program Long-Term Success
(1) Clients entering shelter will report feeling less isolated and afraid and will develop personal goals and a plan of safety. (2) Clients will connect to resources that support their goals. (3) Clients will demonstrate an increase in knowledge and skills in areas of basic healthy functioning, i.e. resources and entitlements; healthy parenting; and problem-solving.
Intermediate-Term: (1) Having their basic needs met (shelter, food, safety) clients will be better positioned to explore the cycle of crisis and begin to identify the cycles that have trapped them in victimization, poverty and abuse. (2) Personal goals strengthen over time to identify a desired outcome, i.e. employment, education/job training, housing, etc. - the beginning of self-determination.
Description
Bay Area Turning Point Inc.’s Self Reliance Program services are vital in meeting the restoration needs of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Violence and abuse weakens the foundation of a person’s self-worth and abuse often creates unintended victims that can become a generational legacy.
Caseworkers, Advocates and Specialists empower the clients to make safer, more positive life choices, guide them to freedom from abuse, lead them to financial stability, offer permanent housing assistance, and reignite their self-determination. SRP offers a 24-hour hotline, advocacy through criminal justice and other victim remedies, one-on-one peer support, individual counseling, art & play therapy for children, housing options, health and wellness options, access to mainstream services, and workshops to address financial, educational, and career barriers.

Program Long-Term Success
The Self Reliance Program’s (SRP) core goal is to assist clients in becoming self-sufficient and to curtail their future need for entitlement benefits and/or the more intense crisis that leads to a need for the intensive service of emergency shelter and basic needs.
Outcome Measure: Within one to three months of beginning counseling, 70% of children will exhibit change in behavior that relates to them witnessing domestic violence or experiencing symptoms of secondary trauma from parents experiencing domestic violence. Baseline: This will be our baseline year. Counselors will do a pre-assessment with the help of the primary caregiver, and will conduct a re-assessment every four weeks thereafter to measure decreases in symptoms as of the impact of trauma on the parent and child.
Outcome Measure: The percent of housing participants who remain in program 6 months will increase by 10% to reach 60%. Baseline: Last year, 50% acheived this.
